Osmosis: types of Solutions
Osmosis: types of Solutions
- Isotonic solution -
The total concentration of dissolved solutions is the same on both sides
of the membrane.
- The water potential is therefore the same on both sides of the membrane
- The movement of water out of the cell is exactly balanced by the movement of
water into the cells
- Hypotonic solution
- The total concentration of dissolved solutions is less outside the cell
than inside the cell.
- The water potential is therefore lower in the cell than outside the
cell.
- There will be net movement of water into
the cell.
- Hypertonic solution
- The total concentration of dissolved solutions are greater outside the
cell than inside the cell.
- The water potential is therefore higher in the cell than outside the
cell.
- There will be net movement of water out
of the cell.
