Osmosis in Animal Cells

Osmosis in Animal cells

Animal cells in a hypertonic solution

  • Higher water potential inside of the cells.
  • Water leaves the cells via osmosis.
  • The cell becomes shrunken or crenate.

Animal cells in a hypotonic solution

  • Lower water potential inside of the cells
  • Water enters the cells via osmosis
  • The cell becomes swollen and can eventually burst
  • They burst because unlike a plant cell they don’t have a cell wall.
